University Fitness Center membership is open to the Penn State Health community and select community members. We recommend every new member start with an orientation where a fitness staff member introduces you to the facility, services, and policies.

Membership Options

Campus Affiliates Expand answer

Students

Membership is free for students defined as full-time Penn State University students that are enrolled in one of the following Penn State College of Medicine programs:

  • Medical School
  • Graduate School
  • Physician Assistant Program
  • College of Nursing
  • Student spouses or significant others, dependent children of students, non-campus affiliated Penn State students, and visiting students are eligible for membership at the rates listed below.

Employees and Volunteers

  • Employees and their spouses, significant others, and dependent children of Penn State Health, Penn State College of Medicine, and Penn State University (includes full-time, part-time, and retirees)
  • Contract employees who work on the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center Campus
  • Employees of the Hershey Outpatient Surgery Center, Penn State Rehabilitation Hospital, and the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute
  • Registered Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center volunteers

Additional Campus Affiliates

  • Mohler Senior Center Members
  • Penn State College of Medicine or Graduate School Alumni including those who have completed residency at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Community Partners include:

  • Hershey Center for Applied Research
  • Hershey Entertainment & Resorts
  • Employees and retirees of Milton Hershey School, Hershey Trust Company, M.S. Hershey Foundation, and the Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning
  • Spouses/domestic partners and dependent children of Community Partners are also eligible for facility membership

The Fitness Center offers visiting family of current members a special membership option when particular criteria are met.

Please note: All individuals under the age of 18 must complete the Fitness Center’s Youth Certification Program to be eligible for membership.

Membership Fees

Short term:

Quarterly:

  • Individual membership: $105
  • Joint membership*: $180

Annual:

  • Individual membership: $400
  • Joint membership*: $695

Memberships for Visiting Family for Community Partners

Current Fitness Center members may purchase a short-term membership for any visiting family member who is residing in the Fitness Center’s member’s home during his or her stay.

  • Fee: $40
  • Non-renewable and valid for one-month only
  • Minimum age for a visiting family membership is 18 years old
  • Based on health history a physician clearance and facility orientation may be required

Senior Memberships Expand answer

Mohler Senior Center Memberships

If you are a member of the Mohler Senior Center, Derry Township’s Senior Community Center for those age 50 and over you, are eligible for a senior membership to the University Fitness Center. The Fitness Center, located on the campus of Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, offers you a convenient location and hours, state of the art equipment, and a professional staff of exercise physiologists.

Membership Fees

The initial $125 (individual) or $220 (joint) fee includes:

  • Required, specialized senior fitness assessment
  • Three, one-on-one training sessions with a University Fitness Center exercise physiologist
  • The first three months of membership (future membership renewal rates are listed below):
    • Individual quarterly: $75
    • Individual annual: $295
    • Joint quarterly: $120
    • Joint annually: $475

*Joint memberships are defined as any two eligible members from the same household (individual and spouse/significant other).

SilverSneakers® Fitness Program

Penn State Health is proud to partner with SilverSneakers®, the nation’s leading fitness program for older adults.

The SilverSneakers® Fitness Program is an innovative health, exercise, and wellness program helping older adults live healthy, active lifestyles. Research has shown that being active at least 30 minutes a day can help reduce the risk of heart disease, depression, and chronic health conditions, and may also improve the symptoms of diabetes and arthritis. Regardless of your age or health, just by increasing your physical activity you can:

  • Have more energy
  • Increase muscle strength and endurance
  • Reduce stress and release tension
  • Sleep better and feel more rested and focused
  • Improve confidence and overall well-being

If your medical health plan, Medicare supplement carrier, or group retiree plan includes SilverSneakers® as part of your benefit package, you can get all this at no extra cost:

  • University Fitness Center membership including all basic amenities
  • Access to degreed and certified exercise physiologists

Youth Memberships Expand answer

Youth memberships are available to the dependents of our campus affiliates and community partner members. Youth members must be 12- to 18-years old to join the Fitness Center. Every new youth member is required to complete our Youth Certification Program at the start of their membership. Youth members age 12 and 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during each visit to the Fitness Center.

Please note: A dependent is someone who is claimed on a parent’s or guardian’s tax records. Full-time students ages 18 to 24 are also considered dependents.

Patient Memberships Expand answer

Self-referred Membership

Our self-referral membership option is available to anyone who is under the care of or being treated by a Penn State Health Physician. This membership is perfect for those who want to join the University Fitness Center but don’t fall into our traditional membership categories.

A physician clearance may be required based on the patient’s medical history and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) guidelines.

Physician-referred Membership

Our physician-referred membership option is available to anyone with a written referral from any physician or licensed healthcare provider.

*Joint memberships are defined as any two eligible members from the same household (individual and spouse/significant other or adult and dependent). This option is not applicable for two dependent memberships.

Application Process and Pricing

Both our Self-Referral Membership and our Physician Referred Membership require new members to complete a complementary, one-on-one new member orientation with a UFC Exercise Physiologist.

Short term:

  • Individual membership: $40
  • Joint membership: N/A

Quarterly:

  • Individual membership: $105
  • Joint membership: $180

Annual:

Special Access for Campus Guests Expand answer

Access for previous members and departmentally-sponsored campus guests

Campus Guest:

Campus departments are able to refer their department’s officially sponsored guests for day pass access or a short term membership by completing the Campus Guest Form.

  • Fees:
    • Day Pass: $15 for one day
    • Short Term Membership: $30

Prior Members:

The Fitness Center is available to previous members for a one-day pass providing the member still has an existing account in our database.

  • Fees:
    • $15 for one day
    • $30 for up to one month

Visiting Family:

Healthier You Expand answer

Whether you’re new to fitness or new to the University Fitness Center, we’re here to help. We’ll provide guidance, education, and instruction to help you achieve your goals and live a healthier lifestyle. Healthier You is a complimentary program offering:

  • 4 scheduled visits with a University Fitness Center exercise physiologist
  • Discussion of fitness goals, medical history, and fitness history
  • Fitness recommendations specific to your goals
  • Introduction to the Fitness Center’s equipment

Locker Rental Program Expand answer

Locker Rental Eligibility

The locker rental program is for individuals enrolled as long term members. Individuals with short term memberships and specialty class participants are not eligible for this program.

Payment Options

Locker rentals will be processed based on your current payment cycle: direct pay or payroll deduction.

Direct Pay:

  • $15.00 – Quarterly
  • $60.00 – Annually

Payroll Deduction:

  • $2.31 – Bi-Weekly
  • $5.00 – Monthly

Renewals and Terminations

Direct pay members will be notified one week after their rental expiry with a reminder to renew their rental agreement. If a renewal is not initiated within one week from the notification, the agreement will be considered terminated. The locker will be cleaned out by the UFC staff and the contents will be retained for a period of one month. After the one-month period, all belongings will be discarded.

Individuals terminating payroll agreements are expected to empty their locker and return their assigned key immediately upon termination.

Lost or Unreturned Keys

Renters are responsible for their issued locker key. A $25 “lost key” fee will be assessed for all lost or unreturned keys.

NOTE: Abuse of lockers or violation of the above rules can result in the loss of locker rental privileges and membership access.

Medical Fitness Options Expand answer

The following options are available for those under the care of  a Penn State Health physician.

Youth Certification Program Expand answer

Specifically designed for our youth members between the ages of 12 and 18, our Youth Certification Program’s foundation lies in education. The Youth Certification Program educates our youngest members about the importance of exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle. All individuals under the age of 18 must complete the Fitness Center’s Youth Certification Program to be eligible for membership.

  • The Youth Certification Program consists of three to four supervised training sessions
  • Training sessions must be completed within a two-month period
  • To ensure safety, we allow current Youth Certification Program participants to only use the equipment they have already learned in their prior Youth Certification Program sessions
  • Youth members ages 12 and 13 must be accompanied by a parent who is also a Fitness Center member
  • The youth member’s parent must attend the first session of the Youth Certification Program

Session Descriptions

  • Session 1: Introduction to the facility – includes a tour of the facility, an overview of membership rules and regulations and cardiovascular training
  • Session 2: Cardiovascular training II – review cardiovascular training principles
  • Session 3: Machine resistance training
  • Session 4: (If needed) – Machine resistance training II, review machine resistance training principles, free weight instruction (not available for members under age 14)
