Pilates for Managing Low Back Pain

An 8-week employer-sponsored wellness program for Penn State Health and College of Medicine employees

Why Pilates?  Pilates is an ideal exercise modality for those dealing with chronic low back pain.  Its low-impact nature makes it appropriate for any age or fitness level.  Some of the extensive benefits of Pilates include: increases in core strength, flexibility, and mobility.

Starting with Pilates Fundamentals, this program will utilize Pilates mat exercises to strengthen, stretch, and help restore mobility.  Depending on the progression of the participants, small props or work on the studio equipment may be included.

*The usual fee for this class is $140 for 8-Weeks however, when you attend 6 out of the 8 classes in the 8-week session, the fee will be waived.  Class is limited to 10 participants.

  • Mondays: 5:45 – 6:30 PM
  • February 25 – April 22 (No Class April 8) – Session is FULL as of 12/14, any additional registrations will go on wait list.

**Registration and payment details:  No payment is needed from you to register and join the roster.  Part of the registration process is that you are agreeing to a payroll deduction if you do not meet the attendance requirement. 

About the Instructor: Jen is a Senior Exercise Physiologist and oversees our Pilates Studio operations.  She has a B.S. in Kinesiology from Penn State University, is a Peak Pilates® Certified Comprehensive Instructor, and has been teaching Pilates at the University Fitness Center since 2009.  Jen was a competitive figure skater so the precision and concentration required in Pilates was of natural appeal to her.  After losing a family member to breast cancer, she was instrumental in bringing The Pink Ribbon Program™ to the UFC and is trained as a Pink Ribbon Program Breast Cancer Exercise Specialist.  Currently, she is pursuing the Discover*Move*Inspire Masters in Pilates Teaching through the Austin Pilates Barn.  In addition to her Pilates certifications, Jen holds certifications from the American Council on Exercise (ACE) as a Gold-Certified Medical Exercise Specialist and Certified Personal Trainer.
