PhD in Biostatistics

 Arthur Berg, PhDFrom the Director

The Division of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics within the Department of Public Health Sciences is proud to join the select group of higher education institutions offering a PhD program in Biostatistics. Technological advances in areas such as imaging, high throughput omics, and electronic medical records constantly add demand for graduate training in Biostatistics. Along with the ever-growing datasets and constantly changing platforms and structures, skilled quantitative analysts — PhD-level biostatisticians — are needed to develop new means of uncovering key scientific discoveries from the data. The Division of Biostatistics & Bioinformatics has committed considerable resources toward the establishment of this program, and we are excited to now be able to participate in the training of the new leaders in this critical research field.

It is a very exciting time to be a biostatistics PhD student at Penn State. Two newly established institutes — the Clinical and Translational Science Institute and the Institute for Personalized Medicine — are building up cutting-edge research programs at Penn State opening doors to exciting research projects in biostatistics that students in this program can engage in.

This program, started in 2011, is somewhat unique in that we require some previous graduate-level training in statistics, such as previous coursework or a master’s degree in biostatistics or statistics.  More details of the prerequisites and other application information can be found on the admissions page. The application deadline each year is Jan 15 for consideration of enrollment in August.  We currently are targeting a recruitment of 4 new students each year.

The Penn State College of Medicine is located in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Hershey is a beautiful family-friendly city located near Pennsylvania’s capital city and close by to Washington DC, Philadelphia, and New York City.

Please contact me if you have questions about the program that are not addressed on this website.
