The mission of Research Development is to strengthen and further develop sponsored research and research training programs at the Penn State College of Medicine in the basic biomedical and clinical sciences, clinical trials, epidemiology, and health care services/outcomes. The primary focus of these efforts is the acquisition of new knowledge that will advance the promotion of better health and the development of improved medical capabilities for the prevention, treatment and cure of disease.
We pursue our mission in part through the identification and distribution of information regarding the availability of research funding from sponsors of health and biomedical research. Through these and related activities, we maintain a liaison with major research sponsors including the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and other federal agencies; the Pennsylvania Department of Health and other Commonwealth agencies; voluntary health agencies, foundations and other not-for-profit organizations; and pharmaceutical, biotech, medical device and other companies that provide health-related products and services. In addition, we work to improve the competitiveness of proposals from the College of Medicine and to encourage and facilitate collaborative interdisciplinary research among basic scientists and clinical investigators at Hershey Medical Center and investigators at other Penn State campuses.
In collaboration with the Office of the Senior Vice President for Research, we coordinate the nomination process for limited submission applications from the College of Medicine. In addition, we administer several College of Medicine grant programs that support pilot and feasibility studies in research areas of high priority to the Medical Center. We pursue these and related activities that strengthen the College of Medicine’s research programs in partnership with other units within the Office of the Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, the Research Team, University Development, Governmental Affairs and other departments throughout Hershey Medical Center and Penn State University.
